As an actor, writer and director, Raoul Walsh’s career spanned over six decades and produced some of Hollywood’s most iconic class movies. He was a capable director in a wide range of genres whose straightforward style was vibrant, but unpretentious. He did his best work in the 1940s with Errol Flynn, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Virginia Mayo. Despite his career faltering after he left Warner Bros., Walsh was undeniably one of the most prolific craftsman ever to step behind the camera.

Before computer graphics took audiences back to ancient worlds, Hollywood built massive sets and employed a literal cast of thousands. Fearful of the new medium of television, studios staged these films in order to draw people to theaters. It worked for a time, but by the early 1960s these epics proved too costly to make. Studios shied away from making these epics for decades, and it would take computer generated effects for studios to even think about doing such large scale movies again.

The brother of noted screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, director Joseph L. Mankiewicz followed his older sibling's footsteps into show business to become one of classic Hollywood's most literate director. Mankiewicz had his start as a writer for Paramount Pictures and later served as a producer for MGM. In the mid-1940s he moved over to 20th Century Fox, which gave him his first shot to direct. Mankiewicz made a number of classic movies and covered most genres, but nowhere was he better than when he skewered show business itself.

‘Pillow Talk’ Gets Blu-Ray Release

As part of their 100th anniversary celebration, Universal Studios will release Pillow Talk (1959) onto Blu-ray, one of many films that will make the transfer to the format this year. Starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson in their first of three movies together, Pillow Talk was a startlingly successful romantic comedy that featured Day as a successful interior designer who shares a party line with a suave playboy (Hudson) during a line shortage. She soon comes to despise him while listening to him woo a different woman every night, only to fall in love after finally they finally meet in person. Pillow Talk became one of the biggest box office hits of the year and earned five Academy Award nominations, including Day's only nod for Best Actress. The two-disc set will contain a number of bonus features, including two behind-the-scenes featurettes, Back in Bed with Pillow Talk and Chemistry 101: The Film Duo of Doris Day and Rock Hudson , as well as three 100 Years of Universal documentaries. ...
